Festivals/Celebrations: Thrissur pooram is one of the most spectacular of festivals in the whole of India. This spectacle line-up over 50 colorfully decorated elephants with traditional pomp and splendor accompanied by the traditional temple music. The pooram culminates in a spectacular firework that lights-up the whole of the night sky and is witnessed by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world.
Athirappilly/Vazhachal waterfalls: These are two of the most scenic and picturesque natural waterfalls in India, located in the Sholayar forest ranges, about 30 minutes drive from Thrissur.
Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary/Peechi Dam and Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife sanctuary: An important wild life sanctuary with over 192 recorded avian specimens and where you can see in their natural habitat some of the globally threatened species such as the Indian Tiger, Asian Elephant, Indian giant squirrel, lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri Langur.
Palayur Church: According to tradition, it was established in 52 AD by St Thomas, one of the twelve close disciples of Jesus Christ.Palayoor church is the oldest Church in India.
Vadakkumnathan Temple: is one of the largest and ancient Shiva temples in Kerala and India. It is located in the heart of Thrissur city. This temple is a classic example of the Kerala style of architecture with beautiful murals delineating graphically, various episodes from the Mahabharata.
Cheraman Juma Masjid: Believed to be built in 629 AD by Malik Bin Deenar, it is considered as the oldest mosque in India, and the second oldest mosque in the world to offer Jumu'ah prayers. |
